August Preliminary Report: Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers

•  The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West with a major-league best record of 66-37; they lead the second-place Padres by two games.

• LA will go with 11 pitchers on the roster for August, and will stick with the 5-man starting rotation they’ve used for most of 1978: Tommy John, Doug Rau, Burt Hooton, Don Sutton, and Rick Rhoden. Terry Forster and Bob Welch will lead the bullpen, one of the strongest in SP78.

• Not wanting to tamper with success, manager Tommy Lasorda will go with the same fielding lineup he’s used all season, save for center field, where Rick Monday will return as the regular center fielder, and the experiment of platooning with Lee Lacy and Bill North will be scrapped. The same batting lineup will be used against both LH and RH pitchers.

• Catcher Steve Yeager is only halfway through his 30-day DL stint, and until his return, Joe Ferguson will continue to be the everyday backstop, with Jerry Grote filling in when needed.

• First baseman Steve Garvey, batting .330 with nine home runs and 11 triples, has played in 452 consecutive games through July 31st.

• Slugging outfielder Reggie Smith leads both leagues in home runs, with 37, and runs batted in, with 90.

• The Dodgers will celebrate Hollywood Stars Night on August 12th.

• Albuquerque Dukes first baseman Pedro Guerrero, who was called up to the parent club on July 24th, did not see any action for the Dodgers during the final week of July, but in August will spell Garvey at first base when LA carries leads late into games. He will also serve as a pinch-hitter when needed.

  1. You’re going to break Steve Garvey’s consecutive game streak for Guerrero?!! I’m furious! The fans will be furious! God Himself will be furious if you let this travesty occur! Have a sense of right and wrong, man!

    • Have a sense of understanding English, man! Guerrero’s going to give Garvey a rest in the late innings of games where they’re leading! He’s still starting every game…his precious streak will not be broken! Lord love a duck, I wish I’d drowned you at Monument Lake when I had the chance!

(Editor’s note: That’s my brother making these ridiculous accusations, so in this instance it’s completely within my right to be rude, threatening, and/or bitingly sarcastic to a person commenting on this site).

  2. You have to watch that Guerrero fella, he’ll cheat in the Skills Competition when you’re not looking. Of course, Garvey will cheat also, but at least not on the baseball field. And are the Dodgers celebrating the old PCL team that used to play at Gilmore Field?

    • Well, we might as dump Bob Costas into the cheating barrel as well…or should his actions from that afternoon be labeled simply ‘not that funny’?

After a check of the trusty internet, I discovered that the Hollywood Stars Night of August 12, 1978 was a pre-game exhibition of celebrities playing baseball just for fun, and not related in any way to the PCL team that left for Salt Lake City in 1958. And in case you’re wondering, I won’t be printing up celebrity Statis Pro cards for this one…unless Jan Smithers and Agnetha Fältskog decide to participate.
