The Commissioner’s Trophy is awarded to the Most Valuable Player of the SP78 All-Star Game, as chosen by the SP78 commissioner. Awarded each All-Star Game since 1962, the trophy was originally called the Arch Ward Memorial Award; the award’s name was changed to the Commissioner’s Trophy in 1970.

Prior to 1978, Rico Carty of the Braves (1970) and Steve Garvey of the Dodgers (1974) were the only players to be elected to starting positions as write-in candidates.
