  1. What is the determinant of order for the player names? Is it by opening day lineup and position order? Just wondering.

    • The order of player names goes way back to 1980, when I was just getting started with the season; using my Kessler Baseball Fans Guide 1978 and my memories of the ’78 season, I created an everyday starting roster for each team, based on their games played, and for their team’s stat sheets I put them in order from catcher to right fielder. This wasn’t a batting order, by the way, just a logical path of positions through the playing field. This list of eight (or nine in the AL) players was followed by the backup catcher or catchers, then the rest of the squad in no particular order. On occasion, you’ll find two players for a position in that opening group; I did this when a team had more than one player who’d played an equal number of games at a particular position.

So in a way, yes, it’s determined by opening day rosters and position order. I’ve always wanted to keep that link to the early days of the game, so I’ve never changed the order, as you can see throughout the various stat guides and on this site (most glaringly with the Braves infielders listed above…and I just checked those 1980 sheets, and yes, even back then I placed shortstops Jerry Royster and Pat Rockett after third baseman Bob Horner, a breach of protocol that, unfortunately, I can’t explain).
