Kingsford Hothead of the Month Award

SP78 - Hothead of the Month
The Hothead of the Month Award, sponsored by Kingsford, is presented to the player in both the NL and AL with the most ejections for the month. In the case of ties, consideration will be taken in regard to the reason for the ejection(s), as well as suspensions, involvement in brawls, and displays of an explosive temper. A player must have at least one ejection for the month to be considered for the award.

April – National League
Tommy John, Los Angeles Dodgers
1 ejection
(1st SP78 player ejected this season, for doctoring a baseball during a game)

April – American League
Rod Carew, Minnesota Twins
2 ejections
(once for arguing with the home plate umpire, and once for arguing with the first base umpire)

May – National League
Dave Hamilton, Pittsburgh Pirates
1 ejection
(for arguing with the home plate umpire during warm-up pitches, before facing a batter, in his first game of the season)

May – American League
Paul Splittorff, Kansas City Royals
2 ejections
(both times for arguing with the home plate umpire)

June – National League
Ozzie Smith, San Diego Padres
2 ejections
(once for arguing with the home plate umpire, and once for arguing with the second base umpire)

June – American League
Larry Gura, Kansas City Royals
3 ejections
(twice for defacing a baseball and shouting obscenities at umpires, and once for disrespectful comments towards the home plate umpire)

July – National League
Gene Tenace, San Diego Padres
3 ejections
(twice for arguing with umpires, and once for his involvement in a brawl)

July – American League
Ross Baumgarten, Chicago White Sox
1 ejection and 1 suspension
(for a dangerous purpose pitch to the head of a batter)
