TWISP Notes #52

TWISP Notes
25th Anniversary Edition
August 22, 2005

Tonight’s Silver Anniversary Game will take place at ‘AZ8’, located in Peoria, Arizona, and will feature an AL matchup between the Royals and Brewers at County Stadium in Milwaukee…

This represents the seventh time an SP78 game has taken place on August 22nd; last year, the SP78 All-Star Game was played on this date…

With tonight’s game taking place at Milwaukee, an AL city will be hosting an anniversary game for the first time; Atlanta was the host city for the 15th Anniversary contest in 1995, while the 10th Anniversary meeting in 1990 was held in Cincinnati. No 5th Anniversary game was played…

Starting pitchers for tonight will be Dennis Leonard (12-3) for the Royals, and Mike Caldwell (13-4) for the Brewers. Caldwell, whose last start resulted in the second SP78 no-hitter of the season, will be working on two-days rest, after pitching one inning in Tuesday’s All-Star Game…

Kansas City reliever Al Hrabosky suffered the first pitcher injury of the SP78 campaign when he left the July 13th Royals-Brewers contest with what would later be diagnosed as an entrapped nerve in his pitching shoulder. He was placed on the 30-day disabled list the next day…

Tonight’s game will be the 1,167th of the season…

In the first game of this two-game series, Cecil Cooper’s one-out double scored Robin Yount from first with the game-winner, as the Brewers scored two in the last of the ninth to top the Royals 5-4…

Dennis Leonard has pitched complete-game shutouts in both of his July starts…

Watch tonight’s 25th Anniversary game on C-SPAN, and in the Kansas City area on KBMA-TV…

The AL defeated the NL 2-1 in the SP78 All-Star Game, played at ‘AZ8’ on August 22, 2004. George Brett of the Royals was named game MVP…

For their July 14th game against New York, the Reds reverted to a lineup last used in May—when they sat atop the NL West—and defeated the Mets 5-2, snapping a 4-game losing skid. Bill Bonham earned the win, his first since June 8th…

The last ‘Solana Lumber Company’ pencil was used for statkeeping a regular-season game on July 9th; the two that remain will be saved for use during the playoffs and World Series. These specialty pencils from the 1970s have been an SP78 fixture since the mid-1980s…

Cleveland erupted for eight runs in the third inning of their game against the A’s en route to a 10-2 pasting at Oakland on July 14th; Andre Thornton and Wayne Cage each hit 3-run homers in the frame…

For the first time this season, it was discovered that a game that should have been played was not; a Texas-Minnesota contest slated for May 25th was somehow missed, and will instead be scheduled as part of a doubleheader on August 23rd…

This marks the 52nd and final issue of TWISP Notes, after 17 years as an SP78 fan information resource…
