Reggie Smith of the Dodgers fell one HR short of tying Babe Ruth’s major league record for home runs hit by the end of June (30). Ruth accomplished the feat twice, in 1928 and 1930. Smith hit his 29th in the last game of the month, versus the Reds in Game 2 of a doubleheader. In the same game, Smith had a deep drive to center field that was snared at the wall by AAA call-up Champ Summers…

Orioles relief ace Don Stanhouse is 3-0 with one save in Baltimore’s first four games of July…

The first seven SP78 games played on July 5th were shutouts…

Rod Carew slapped his 2,000th career hit on July 1st at Metropolitan Stadium against the White Sox, a single to lead off the Twins’ half of the first inning in Game 2 of a doubleheader…

The NL office suspended Reds manager Sparky Anderson one game for his post-game tirade after a doubleheader loss to LA on June 30th. Anderson, who served the suspension July 4th, would not comment on the incident, but did acknowledge that he’d met with league officials…

San Diego outfielder Dave Winfield and Milwaukee outfielder Gorman Thomas each hit four home runs between July 1st and July 4th…
