Mark Fidrych improved his record to 1-1 with a six-hit, 5-1 win over the visiting Yankees at Tiger Stadium. Fidrych has allowed just two runs over two games since being called up to the Tigers from Evansville of the International League…

Orioles infielder Billy Smith, who smacked his first homer of 1978 off Boston’s Dennis Eckersley June 24th at Fenway Park, is once again being investigated for allegations of illegal bat use. Smith, who was suspended for three games earlier this season for using an improperly-weighted bat, declined to comment…

Since taking over for a suspended Lou Whitaker on June 11th, Tiger utility infielders Steve Dillard and Mark Wagner are batting a combined .255 (12-for-47 in 13 games) while platooning at second base. Dillard (.258, 2 doubles) and Wagner (.250 in four games) have made three errors since the year-long suspension of Whitaker, who was batting .313 with six errors in 48 games for the season.
