Jim Bouton began his comeback bid with the Braves on June 21st with a 4-2 victory over the Padres at San Diego Stadium. Bouton, pitching in the majors for the first time since 1970, allowed six hits and two earned runs over 7 2/3 innings, striking out eight while walking only two. Bouton will serve as Atlanta’s fifth starter…

Also on June 21st, Yankees ace Ron Guidry won his league-leading 13th game with a 3-0 shutout of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Cleveland’s Rick Waits and Baltimore’s Scott McGregor remained close behind Guidry, each winning their 12th of the season…

In three games with the Orioles, speed demon Al Bumbry is 0-for-3 in base stealing attempts…

Troubled utility infielder Kurt Bevacqua of the Rangers was sent to the Tucson Toros of the Pacific Coast League after serving his 3-day suspension for actions ‘detrimental to the game of baseball’. Bevacqua, who in 26 games was hitting a paltry .208 with two home runs and eight RBI, will not likely return to the major leagues this season. Toros shortstop Nelson Norman, who batted .325 during a stint with the Rangers earlier this year, was called up to replace Bevacqua…

Ozzie Smith of the Padres is 21-0 in steal attempts for the month of June…

The Kingsford Hothead of the Month Award for the AL was presented to Royals pitcher Larry Gura, who was ejected from three consecutive starts between June 9th and June 21st. Gura, who was tossed from the June 9th game against the Tigers after only 2/3 of an inning pitched, blamed a shrinking strike zone and dew-coated infields for his ejections…

Reds catcher Johnny Bench, with 11 home runs this season, needs just two more to reach the 300th of his career…

On the day that Milwaukee catcher Buck Martinez returned from the 30-day disabled list, the Brewers placed his backup, Andy Etchebarren, on the 75-day DL, after a foul off the bat of Rick Dempsey struck Etchebarren in the throat in the second inning of the Orioles-Brewers game on June 22nd. Etchebarren will not be eligible to return to the active roster until September 10th…

Cubs starter Mike Krukow became the second pitcher this season to belt a home run, a solo shot off Dick Ruthven in the seventh inning of Chicago’s 5-3 win over Philadelphia on June 23rd. Krukow’s blast was the first of his major league career…

The Dodgers’ current 10-game winning streak has lifted them into first place in the NL West, a half game ahead of the Padres…
