TWISP Notes #28

TWISP Notes
January 13, 1992

An abstract Statis Pro 1978 Replay record was established in 1991 as four different SP78 games were played in four different states in a one-week span. From November 28th to December 5th an AL game was played in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California…

The Brewers called up catcher Andy Etchebarren from their Spokane farm club to replace Buck Martinez, who was injured May 21st at Anaheim Stadium. Etchebarren will serve as backup to Charlie Moore…

The Chaney-led Braves will meet the Reds in a 3-game set beginning May 22nd at Riverfront Stadium. Get your tickets now at the Reds 580 Gift Shop and all Cincinnati-area Burkhardt’s stores…

NL – May 21

LA defensive replacement Teddy Martinez atoned for his throwing error—which led to a game-tying run—with a two-out, 2-run home run in the bottom half of the ninth, sending the Dodgers to a 7-5 win over the Giants…San Diego completed a 4-game sweep of the punchless Reds with a 2-0, 2-1 doubleheader sweep at Riverfront. Jerry Turner hit his 8th homer for the Padres in the first game, and Gene Tenace clubbed a 2-run shot in the nightcap…The Cubs beat the Cards 5-3 at Wrigley, despite three errors by third baseman Rodney Scott. Dennis Lamp (5-2) pitched eight innings for the win…Houston’s 3-run eighth inning ended a scoreless duel, and Joe Sambito defused a ninth inning Braves rally to preserve an Astros 3-0 win. Darrel Chaney went 2-for-5 at the plate, maintaining his .408 average…Solo homers by Ellis Valentine and Warren Cromartie powered Montreal to a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh. Expos starter Steve Rogers improved his record to 5-4…The lowly Mets shocked the Phils for the second straight day with a convincing 5-3 win at New York. Mets outfielder Steve Henderson added a pair of triples to his team’s 10-hit attack…

AL – May 21

Baltimore took two from Cleveland at Municipal Stadium. Doug DeCinces hit his 6th and 7th HR’s and had four RBI in Baltimore’s first-game win, and Eddie Murray hit two of his own in the second game, a wild 20-16 Orioles win that set SP78 records for total runs and total hits collected in a game. Indians second baseman Duane Kuiper went 5-for-5 in the second game, good for five RBI…Oakland and Chicago split their doubleheader, 7-1 White Sox in Game 1 and 2-1 A’s in Game 2…In the makeup game of a May 20th rainout, the Brewers blanked the Angels behind the 11-strikeout performance of Moose Haas. In the regularly scheduled contest, Milwaukee survived a ninth inning bases-loaded scare and nipped California 2-1 to complete the sweep. Bill Travers (2-5) picked up the win, while Nolan Ryan (3-4) suffered the loss…In a doubleheader at Exhibition Stadium, the Jays took the first game 10-8, thanks in part to a 6-run second inning; in the second game, Blue Jays DH Willie Horton’s home run in the ninth knotted the score at 2-2, but the Yankees erupted for three runs in the tenth to gain the split. The Yankees lead in the East remains at five games…Texas topped Seattle 6-2 and dropped the M’s a half-game behind the front-running Twins. Bump Wills led Rangers batters with two singles and two doubles…A ‘Phil Mankowski Day’ crowd at Tiger Stadium saw Detroit and Boston split their twinbill, with Mankowski collecting a single in each game. The Tigers third baseman was playing for the first time since spending 30 days on the disabled list. A three-run eighth inning gave the Tigers the win in the opener, while Jim Rice won Game 2 for the Bosox with a ninth inning HR, his fourth of the year…The rampaging Twins clipped the Royals 3-1, becoming the first team in the majors to win 30 games…
