With Wednesday’s 8-0 blanking of San Diego, Chicago’s Dennis Lamp has now pitched 24 consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to April 26th. Lamp has given up just two earned runs in his last four starts, and his ERA this season stands at 1.29…

Baltimore’s Tippy Martinez became the first American League pitcher to bat in a game, May 10th against Boston. He sacrificed in a pinch-hitting appearance…

Lou Brock and Jerry Mumphrey of the Cardinals both suffered injuries after colliding in the 11th inning of Thursday’s Cardinals-Dodgers game. Brock was placed on the 30-day disabled list; Springfield outfielder Jim Lentine was called up to replace him…

Minnesota’s Bob Randall, after a 3-for-5 performance against Chicago, has moved ahead of KC’s George Brett in the race for the AL batting crown. Randall took over the top spot with a .422 average, with Brett close behind ate .410…

There are three players in the majors who have yet to see action this season: shortstop Mike Fischlin of the Astros, and pitchers Paul Thormodsgard and Stan Perzanowski of the Twins. Fischlin has been slated to start May 12th against the Mets…

NL – May 11

At Los Angeles, Ron Cey, Rick Monday, and Lee Lacy hit consecutive homers in the fourth inning off Cards starter Silvio Martinez, but it was Manny Mota’s pinch-single in the eleventh which gave LA a 4-3 win over St Louis. Bobby Castillo, the fourth Dodgers pitcher, picked up the win…A 5-run eighth inning helped Tom Seaver gain his fourth win, a 9-1 disembowelment of the Phillies at Veterans Stadium. Ken Griffey went 4-for-4 with two intentional walks…After being shut out the previous day, San Diego sought revenge on Chicago by pounding out 21 hits, good for 17 runs and a 17-0 shutout win of their own. Dave Winfield drove in five, while Jerry Turner and Gene Richards scored four runs apiece…The Pirates dropped San Francisco into third place with a 6-4 victory at Candlestick Park. Jim Rooker (2-4) defeated Bob Knepper (5-3), with Kent Tekulve earning the save after two innings of perfect relief…In a 19-inning yawner, the Expos clipped the Mets 6-5, thanks to Ellis Valentine’s no-out single, which scored Andre Dawson from second. A total of 43 players were used in the game…

AL – May 11

A bases-loaded walk to Roy Smalley in the top of the ninth pushed across the winning run for Minnesota in a 5-4 victory over Chicago at Comiskey Park. Roger Erickson (4-1) earned the win, with ninth inning help from Mike Marshall…With the Yankees idle, Boston moved a half-game closer to first in the AL East with a 5-3 win over Baltimore. A 4-run fourth inning—highlighted by George Scott’s first HR of the year—improved spot-starter Andy Hassler’s record to 2-0…At Tiger Stadium, California defeated Detroit 5-1…
