A 3-run first inning pushed Detroit to a 5-1 victory over California at Tiger Stadium. Jack Billingham (2-4) beat Frank Tanana, who lasted just four innings…At Milwaukee, Rangers third baseman Toby Harrah turned a pitchers duel into a blowout with a 7th-inning grand slam, and Mike Caldwell suffered his worst defeat of the season as the Rangers coasted to a 6-1 win over the Brewers. Starter Jon Matlack improved his record to 5-1 with the complete game victory…Toronto bombarded Oakland pitching for 16 hits in a 14-2 clubbing at Exhibition Stadium. Al Woods led the Jays attack with a pair of triples and four runs scored…Seattle made it nine in a row with a 10-2 drubbing of Cleveland. Julio Cruz, Craig Reynolds, and Tom Paciorek had three hits apiece…The Twins could not hold a 4-run lead as the Yankees came back for a 6-5 win at New York. Twins starter Dave Goltz was thwarted in his attempt at becoming SP78’s first 7-game winner…A 2-run throwing error by Jerry Terrell—subbing for regular third baseman George Brett—broke a scoreless tie and helped Boston to a close 2-1 victory over Kansas City at Fenway Park…
