TWISP Notes #17

January 11, 1989

San Diego (UPI) – Padres outfielder Dave Winfield became the first SP78 player this season to connect for three home runs in a game, and Gaylord Perry gained his fifth win against one defeat, leading the Padres to an 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs May 9th at San Diego Stadium.

Winfield also stroked a pair of singles to complete a 5-for-5, six RBI night. He now has six HR’s and 19 RBI on the year, improving his average to an even .300.
A crowd of 1 was on hand to witness the historic pokes.

Mike Phillips of the Cards and Biff Pocoroba of the Braves were both put on the 30-day disabled list after suffering injuries in their games on May 9th…

Since coming off the disabled list April 23rd and returning to action May 2nd, Steve Ontiveros of the Cubs is hitting .467…

NL – May 9

Ellis Valentine’s sixth inning 2-run homer was all the offense Montreal needed in a 2-0 shutout of Atlanta. With the defeat, the Braves became the first team in either league to reach the 20-loss mark…At Cincinnati, Doug Bair walked Bruce Boisclair with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, allowing John Stearns to score the go-ahead run, and Gary Lockwood finished with a one-two-three inning to give the New York Mets a slim 2-1 victory over the Reds. The Mets had tied the game in the ninth on a Boisclair RBI double…Houston erupted for six runs in the first, and little Jimmy Sexton punched a pair of pop-fly home runs as the visiting Astros blanked Philly 7-0. Floyd Bannister (2-4) went the distance to earn his second straight win. Starter Jim Kaat (0-1) took the loss for Philadelphia…The Giants kept their slim lead in the West with a convincing 9-2 win over Pittsburgh. Vida Blue (5-2) struck out seven and walked one, while Jack Clark led the SF attack with two hits and three RBI…Don Sutton and Charlie Hough combined on an eight-hitter to lead Los Angeles over St Louis 5-2. Lou Brock’s late-inning double accounted for both Cardinal runs…
