With the tenth anniversary date of SP78 play drawing near, I thought it would be fun to invite fans to take part in the game’s festivities, like I’d done with ‘Steve Ontiveros Day’ back in 1988. This game was a Padres-Reds match-up being held at site SD3 in Rancho Penasquitos, California, and this time, before I created tickets to the event, I typed and printed up this simple order form, which I sent off to several friends and family members who were aware of my season, and lived close enough to attend the game.
Sadly, I didn’t get any responses, and settled in to play the game alone when my brother Scott arrived home just before first pitch, and sat down at the dining room table to watch. A few innings later, my friend Joe and his wife happened to stop by for a visit, and they decided to hang out and watch, too. The resulting crowd of 4 set a new attendance record for an SP78 game, a mark which wouldn’t be broken until I played 15th Anniversary Game exactly five years later.
In hindsight, I wish I’d printed up some tickets and sent those out instead, so I’d now have a fourth ticket to add to the collection on this page. Also, looking at the form now, I wonder if it was the ‘Send Cash To’ line that scared everyone off.
