NL Award Winners for June Announced

If you’ve ever received issues of TWISP Notes, or own one of two existing copies of the SP78 June Stat Guide, then you already know that I first announced the June award winners back in 2001. But I didn’t want to post the names of these players on the SP78 site until I’d completed re-analyzing the June stats, and now that I’ve done that, and am ready to start posting those stats, I figured I’d finally present those award winners now. As for the AL awards, I’ll announce those recipients after all the June stats for the NL have been posted.

Player of the Month
Reggie Smith, LA

Dodgers outfielder Smith went on a rampage in June, hitting .414 with 15 home runs and 34 RBIs, leading the league in the latter two categories. He also led the NL in runs scored, with 31, and had three 2-HR games.

Pitcher of the Month
Bert Blyleven, PIT

After starting the SP78 season with a won-lost record of 4-5, Blyleven went 4-0 for the resurgent Pirates in June, with a 1.95 earned run average and one shutout.

Fire Chief Trophy
Kent Tekulve, PIT

Bucs reliever Tekulve had a whopping 8 saves and an ERA of 0.49 for the month, and was tied for second in NL relief appearances, with 14. It was the second time Tekulve has won the award this season.

Crystal Slugger Award
Reggie Smith, LA

Smith collected his second award of the month with an astronomical .901 slugging percentage, the leader in the NL by a longshot. Smith collected 22 singles, 9 doubles, and 15 home runs in 111 at-bats.

Ross Barnes Memorial Trophy
Bill Buckner, CHI

First baseman Buckner had the highest batting average in the National League for the month of June, going 43-for-96 over 23 games played to finish with a mark of .448.

George Bradley Memorial Trophy
Doug Rau, LA

The surprising Rau finished June with an NL-best earned run average of 0.92, allowing just 4 runs in 39 innings pitched, over a span of six games.

Diamond Glove Award

Iron Glove Award
Rodney Scott, CHI

Scott took over at third base for the Cubs in June, after Steve Ontiveros went on the DL for the second time this season, and though he responded with a .290 batting average in 26 games, he also made 7 errors at the hot corner to lead the National League.

Hothead of the Month Award
Ozzie Smith, SD

During the first week of June, the normally-sedate Smith was ejected twice for confrontations with umpires: first for arguing a safe call on an opponent’s steal attempt of second, then again for voicing his displeasure over strike calls in a game just four days later.
