August Preliminary Report: Indians

Cleveland Indians
• Veteran pitcher Rick Wise will hope to improve on his 0-4 record in July when he opens the month of August for the Tribe against the Royals at Municipal Stadium. After their quick two-game set with KC, the Indians will then hit the road for six games against the red-hot Rangers and Red Sox.

• The Indians hit .296 as a team in July, but to better understand their 13-17 record for the month, look no further than their sub-par pitching numbers: a 4.53 team ERA, with just three complete games to the staff’s credit. Even All-Star Rick Waits was having trouble, going 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA after finishing the first three months of the season with a 12-3 mark and a 2.35 earned run average.

• Wise, Waits, Mike Paxton, and David Clyde will fill out the 4-man starting rotation for manager Jeff Torberg, with former 20-game winner Wayne Garland waiting in AAA for a possible August call-up if any of the four show signs of implosion.

• Pitcher Dave Freisleben was sent down to the team’s minor league affiliate in Portland on August 1st, and was replaced on the roster by outfielder Dan Briggs, who will serve as backup to injured left fielder Paul Dade.

•  Buddy Bell (.364), Jim Norris (.358), and Rick Manning (.343) led the Indians in batting for July, while Andre Thornton led the squad in home runs (8) and runs batted in (22).

  1. Not that you care about the modern day MLB, but did you know that Waits is the current pitching coach for the Mariners? Also, that he waited until his 12th and final year in the majors to take his first turn at the plate, and that in his big moment, he whiffed? (He did score 4 runs as a pinch runner in the mid-70’s, so apparently he was OK on the base paths).

    • WAIT…are you telling me that Rick Waits WAITed for his final year to finally get an at-bat? Who WAITS that long for a chance to bat? And no, I didn’t know Waits was a coach for the M’s…I wonder how long he had to WAIT for that opportunity? As my friend Dave at Pomerado used to say…oh, WAAAAAAAIT!
