August Preliminary Report: Padres

San Diego Padres
• After finishing 1977 in fifth place with a 69-93 record, the Padres have turned it around in 1978, keeping pace with the NL West-leading Dodgers all season and possessing the third best won-lost in SP78 at 65-40. San Diego is currently just two games behind LA, and two ahead of third-place San Francisco, by far the tightest divisional race in baseball right now.

• Third baseman Bill Almon was the only SD player to appear in all 29 Padres games last month.

• A surprise on the Padres pitching staff in July was Bob Owchinko, a PB 2-6 southpaw who went 4-0 with a 2.16 ERA, and proved to be the squad’s most reliable starter.

• Outfielder Gene Richards led SD in average (.340), hits (34), and stolen bases (13) for July, and will now bat lead-off in August; Ozzie Smith will drop down one spot in the batting order, a move manager Roger Craig hopes will spark some hit-and-run success between the two speed demons.

• The Padres will begin the month with a 4-man starting rotation: Gaylord Perry, Randy Jones, Bob Owchinko, and Eric Rassmussen. Jones will get the start on August 1st, hoping to return to the form he displayed in his back-to-back 20-win seasons of 1975 and 1976.

• August 10th is 7-Up Jr Padres Night at San Diego Stadium.

  1. It’s fun to see these Padres doing well because I watched these Padres a lot. This was a really good team that should have won more than they did. I really hope they stay in the race until the final days. Owchinko for Padre player of the month!

    • Of course, I’d much rather see the Reds battle it out for first place in the NL West, but since that’s not to be, I’m glad to see the Padres there instead. When I was checking their history last night, I was surprised to find that they’d finished 84-78 in 1978, but unfortunately in fourth place (in a tough division). Right now in SP78, a 90-win season is not out of the question…and wouldn’t it be cool to see a Padres-Phillies match-up in the playoffs!
